Abel Brainz Digest, Vol. 57 - July 6, 2024

Welcome back!

Last week was fun. We got vulnerable.

This week, I'm late. But who's keeping track? It's not like I have to clock in or something.

Let's get to it!

cool music stuff

John Willams ep. of Smartless - the seed of an idea is all that you need. The way he and Spielberg agreed on the notes for Close Encounters is testament to that. SPOILER: What's amazing is that they only kind of liked the sequence they chose. Click here for the alien jam sesh.

STAX doc- holy smokes. If you have the means to get Max, I highly recommend.

Happy Birthday Purple Rain!!! (40 years!!) (the movie and the album were released a month apart!!) I have vague memories of this album (and film) as a little kid. As I grew up, Prince made his way in and out of the headlines and our radios at home. For some reason I bought his greatest hits in high school, even if I wasn't the biggest Prince fan. They played 1999 at every school dance my senior year....

And then, in college, something clicked. I'd probably have to write a separate essay figuring out why I all of the sudden gravitated towards his music. I did write this silly article about Prince and Seinfeld a while back. My writing style has changed, the sentiment remains the same.

Happy Birthday, Do The Right Thing!!

This Spike Lee classic celebrates its 35th anniversary this Summer. In my opinion, it is one of the best films of the 20th century and needs to be shown in high school history classes.

TL;DR

Live in the now

The future never looks like you picture it

It's really easy to feel as if we're not where we want to be. I know I'm going to butcher this summary; In 4000 Weeks, the author says something about doing stuff for the future and it's never what you picture. It kind of overlaps with The Power of Now for me. Anyway, it's also very difficult to accept that this is where we are now. And as much as we have a specific idea of what the future looks like, it never will be that specific. If Doc Brown showed up and told me at 28 where I'd be at 43, I never would've believed all of it. Family? Awesome! Wife? Awesome! House? Awesome! Atlanta?.... Atlanta.... Really?... I could barely pay my mortgage last year without help from my family? Nahhhh, c'mon. I'm successful! I don't have to worry about money, right??? Right?? ... Doc??
