Abel Brainz Digest, Vol. 14 - August 8, 2023
Hey all!
This week flew by. I thought I was going to write about Paul Reubens but realized all of last week was about Paul Reubens.
RIP Paul Reubens.
Reading Stuff!
I finished The Sentence by Louise Erdrich. Great fiction set in a very real and recent time period. Reading a novel about 2020 is weird but also brings you into the world of the novel that much more.
I'm still taking my time with What It Is by Lynda Barry. It's pretty inspiring. If you have any interest in creativity or art, check this book out. Part memoir, part graphic novel, it's a lot of fun.
I finished up The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin*. This is another one that spoke to me and I can't recommend it enough.
*Click here for one of my recent favorites with Rick Rubin and Paul McCartney. The internet is undefeated.
Currently reading - Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, Breaking Bread with the Dead by Alan Jacobs, Slow Days, Fast Company by Eve Babitz.
I'm sure I'll share thoughts on those as well.
Movie Stuff!
Director William Friedkin passed away yesterday. He is most known for The Exorcist and The French Connection. Check those movies out if you haven't seen them. I haven't seen The Exorcist in a minute, but this article has got some fun stories to go with it.
Stuff that lives rent free in my head!
Amidst the improv approaches, grocery lists, and what time I have to pick my kids up from school, there is an encyclopedia of movie quotes, scenes, music, sound cues, and reactions. This scene from The Big Lebowski is a permanent resident in my brain (honestly, the whole movie lives up there) Coolest part about this scene to me is that all of the "ums, "uhs" and stammers are scripted.
That about does it this week. Click here for all the past volumez and please feel free to forward it to anyone that might enjoy reading this.
