Abel Brainz Digest, Vol. 64 - August 22, 2024

Hey all!

64!

Let's go!

cool reading stuff

The Work of Art is good. If you're a nerd about anything, even if it's not art, you'll love it. Adam Moss interviews artists from a lot of different mediums about their process. Super interesting.

cool movie stuff

I put on Jaws the other night. I used to know a lot about the classic (still do) that put Steven Spielberg on the map. Why did I know so much about the movie? I was a Universal Studios Tour Guide. The tour recently celebrated 60 years of pulling back the curtain on movie magic (actually a line from the tour guide script) and it was the funnest job I ever had.

cool democracy stuff

The DNC is happening and politics aside, I wish Chris Farley was still alive. Random? Maybe. Unless you realize Farley would've done an amazing job portraying Tim Walz. Many political sketches in SNL history have been hilarious. Perhaps you remember this classic with Phil Hartman as Bill Clinton. I loved Dana Carvey's George H.W. Bush and his Ross Perot. SNL has been doing political sketches forever and some of them were bad. Awful, even. Frankly, I wish they would use them sparingly. There's the old show biz saying, "leave them wanting more." Always a good idea, in my opinion. Sure it's easy to be a critic. Creating and writing a weekly sketch show is no small feat. I'm no Lorne Michaels. Shoot, I'm not even a Douglas Bubbletrousers. The point is, comedy is hard, and it's the hard that makes it great.
