Abel Brainz Digest, SPECIAL DOUBLE ISSUE - Vol. 67 & 68 - September 22, 2024
Volume 67 AND 68!!!
I didn't forget!!!
And even if I did, maybe I just thought two is better than one.
Whatever, man....
Let's go!
Fun improv/creative stuff
From Austin Kleon's recent newsletter
I think this is something you have to get yourself addicted to if you’re going to be a writer or an artist or any kind of creative person in the long run: the tiny, repeatable thrill of starting with nothing and ending up with something.
Is that applicable to improv, or what?? (SPOILER: It is.)
And the more I improvise the more I still grow and see the value in exactly what Austin Kleon is talking about. The small, repeatable thing that applies to all improvisers wherever they are in their journey’s is: staying in the moment.
Trite? Maybe. Those moments are all we really have when we're improvising. When we stay in the moment, we're listening, we're connected, we're curious. Little things like staying in the moment are the "something" we end up with. We end up with that glorious connection and presence. And sometimes we aren't as in the moment, and then we get to do it again. You may have heard me say it in class or from somewhere else:
Chop wood, carry water, reach enlightenment. Chop wood, carry water, reach enlightenment.
The little things lead to something, anything, and then we get to do it again.
Fun Improv Stuff AND Shameless Self Promotion
I’M PERFORMING
Sorry to yell. As you may know, I don’t do it often. I’ll be at Dynamic Eldorado for the next 2 (two) Saturdays for a fun short-form extravaganza called Habitat for Insanity. It’s a great opportunity to help support Dynamic Eldorado after some buttheads broke in and literally broke the theater. Show’s at 7:30 and you can click here for tix.
RIP James Earl Jones
Maaaaan, what a bummer. What a life lived. I took a deep dive in my memories and this man was a part of almost every aspect of my life, in terms of stuff that impacted me. Star Wars (duh), Coming to America, The Sandlot, Field of Dreams, and The Hunt for Red October. And then I recently discovered this gem a few years ago, this one the other day, and this one too, Hit me up with your favorite James Earl Jones role, moment, etc.
RIP Frankie Beverly
I can't profess to know A LOT of Frankie Beverly tunes. The two classics most know are Joy and Pain and Before I Let Go. The latter got a lot of attention a few years ago thanks to Beyonce. This one was on heavy rotation last year.
That about does it for me.
